Food is Everyone’s Business
We all eat and we all have a vested interest in insuring the food supply is sufficient and provides safe nourishing and appealing food for ourselves and our families.
When all people in a community have access to nutritious, safe, personally acceptable and culturally appropriate foods obtained in an environmentally sustainable way, that community is said to be Food Secure.
Work is underway in the Cowichan Valley to improve Food Security.
Spearheaded by Cowichan Green Community with funding from VIHA’s Community Food Action Initiative, workshops were held last winter and spring to obtain input from the community on what the community would like to see happen to increase Food Security in the Cowichan Valley. The result is the Cowichan Food Security Plan.

Next steps are the establishing of a Cowichan Food Security Coalition and a Food Charter for the Cowichan Valley. To become involved please contact Cowichan Green Community at 250-748-8506 or Community Nutrition at 250-709-3050 ext 5509.
One step towards making the Cowichan Valley more food secure is to support local food production. Here in the Cowichan Valley we are very fortunate to have food grown locally and available at farms markets.
